How to Start Using AI: Especially If You're in Ministry

Whether you're planning an event, writing a devotional, or coming up with game ideas for your youth group, there's one tool I use for everything—and it's not Google. In fact, I only use Google when I need a location or something hyper-local. For everything else? I go straight to ChatGPT. Here's why...

Let me tell you how I really feel about AI—especially tools like ChatGPT.

When someone asks me how to get started with AI, I always say the same thing: “Just use it. Literally. Start using it for everything.

Don’t overthink it. Don’t feel like you need a masterclass before you begin. Just start asking it questions like you would a super-smart assistant sitting across from you at your desk. The key? Treat ChatGPT like your go-to helper for ministry, planning, content creation, and beyond.

Here’s my personal rule of thumb:

Use AI for everything—except when you're looking for local stuff.
If I need to know what time the hardware store closes or which coffee shops are near the church, sure, I’ll hit up Google. But if I’m writing an email to my ministry group, brainstorming sermon titles, creating an event flyer, coming up with games for a family night, outlining discipleship curriculum, or figuring out how to word something more clearly...

👉 I’m using ChatGPT.

And the beautiful thing? AI doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t need to “circle back.” It’s fast, helpful, and gets better the more you use it.

Think of it like this: Google is a library. ChatGPT is a conversation. And if you’re in ministry, conversations are where the magic happens.

As always, thanks for reading!
